March Birthstones: Aquamarine & Bloodstone

March babies are fortunate to have two exquisite birthstones: Aquamarine and Bloodstone. Aquamarine, from the Latin Aqua Marina meaning “of the sea,” features tranquil blue-green hues that evoke the serenity of ocean waters. Symbolising clarity and courage, it pairs beautifully with diamonds, making it a versatile choice for both cooler and warmer months. Interestingly, Aquamarine is a close relative of Emerald, as both belong to the Beryl mineral family.

Bloodstone, with its deep green body and striking red speckles, has long been associated with vitality and protection. It is particularly striking in signet rings, especially when engraved with an intaglio design. Whether you favour the refreshing cool tones of Aquamarine or the rich, earthy elegance of Bloodstone, these gemstones create stunning pieces imbued with meaning.

Celebrating Women: International Women’s Day (8th March) & Mothering Sunday (30th March)

For our devoted male readers, honour the extraordinary women in your life, or for our ladies, treat yourself to a timeless piece of jewellery this International Women’s Day and Mothering Sunday. Classic pearls, delicate gold or silver pendants, and statement gemstone rings make perfect gifts to celebrate strength and achievements. Hearts, floral motifs, and colourful gemstones remain ever-popular choices.

Why not opt for a piece featuring a teal sapphire? This captivating gemstone exudes confidence and sophistication, harmonising beautifully with Aquamarine’s cool blues or echoing the deeper greens of Bloodstone. Teal sapphires were a standout trend in 2024 across the UK and US, and they continue to dominate in 2025—we released five new teal sapphires recently, and four sold within a week, even before making it to Instagram!

Green remains a prominent colour trend, from pastel mints to rich forest hues. Tourmalines, mint garnets, and sapphires in various shades are at the forefront of fashion, symbolising nature, renewal, and vitality. Whether set in rings, pendants, or earrings, these gemstones are a must-have for the season.

From the Design Studio:

Many of you know Dan Roe, son of Timothy Roe. A true jack-of-all-trades, Dan is multi-skilled dabbling often on the bench with the goldsmiths, he previously owned and ran a successful casting business and he knows CAD design. He is our go-to IT and tech expert, and he writes our in-house valuations, tests scrap gold, and calculates the quotes for bespoke pieces and repairs. He ensures the smooth running of the business, has a sharp eye for statistics and trends, and plays a key role in keeping our artisanal craft thriving in an increasingly digital world. He also has inherited his dad’s artistic talents and we love seeing his sketches. Quite simply, we couldn’t do without him!

But how well do you really know Dan? Let’s put your knowledge to the test! 😃

1. What design project has been your favourite or most memorable to date?

My favourite piece was a solid yellow and white gold Fender Telecaster Guitar pendant! The client was a huge Status Quo fan, hence the telecaster -  I think this was pre CAD/CAM, so it must have been 2002/2003 and it was all handmade.   I really ought to make myself a Jazzmaster one to match my guitar at home!  I think the most memorable piece has to have been an Oval 3.00ct D Flawless (not just Internally Flawless, but actually Flawless) diamond engagement ring we made for a very lucky lady! I had never seen a diamond as stunning as that - it was a once in a lifetime treat and a true privilege to work with the clients.

2. What is your favourite gemstone and colour?

I have always very much enjoyed looking at the hypnotic array of colours you see in Opals - particularly the Australian material! Though in terms of an overall favourite, it has to be sapphires for me! A deep Royal Ceylon Blue Sapphire will always attract my attention - ideally a well proportioned, slightly rectangular cushion cut, if I am being specific!   They are truly beautiful!

3. What part of your job is/was your favourite?

Being able to see a customer at the beginning of the process, see their jewellery take shape from design, through to manufacturing and crafting,  through to handing over the completed jewellery to them personally - and seeing their reaction - that is always very enjoyable and rewarding.  Jewellery is often given at important milestones in our client's lives and carries great sentimental weight - so it's nice to play a small part in that.

Second to that, I really enjoyed rebuilding our website in 2021 - Becky, Emma and Charlie have been handling things recently, and doing a great job with it too, but I definitely enjoyed that!

4. How has CAD changed jewellery designing?

It has made the design element of jewellery creation much easier and accessible, you can prototype and get visuals with relative ease now, which is a fantastic tool to have.   That being said, accessibility and ease of use does not necessarily make for the best designs.  There are some pretenders out there using presets and the equivalent of a digital catalogue - which is just a modern version of the old paper catalogues and ring binders of times gone by,  rather than creating truly bespoke designs as we do in house here!

We are very lucky to have Chris and Tim here with their design skills, combined with their knowledge of CAD software, it makes them a force to be reckoned with! Tim's background in antique jewellery has meant we have a much keener eye for design detail here - that has been passed on to Chris while he was learning from Tim.

Having a workshop on site here has meant that the CAD element, which we started using in 2004, has always 'grown up' in that environment - we can tweak the designs to our goldsmiths and stone setters requirement - and its a constant feedback loop - we are always learning and finding new ways of creating jewellery and improving things.   It's not simply about CAD alone here, it's about the interaction between the virtual (CAD) and the real (our workshop team) and maintaining an equilibrium with that, utilising the best elements of each to create beautiful unique jewellery for our customers!

5. What age did you start learning about jewellery and goldsmithing?

I have always been around it as far back as I can remember - so I am not sure exactly when!  I made my first piece - a letter J for my primary school teacher when I was leaving for 'big school' - so I was 11 when I made that.

I have an earlier memory of rummaging through my mum's jewellery box (this would have been early 90s probably) and she had a charm bracelet in there - I remember being fascinated by all the articulated moving parts and fine details of the charms.  I think that certainly sparked an interest in jewellery!

As well as that, Tim was (and still is) an avid (compulsive?!) doodler.  There were always drawings of rings on any piece of paper lying around the house - you could not leave anything near him without the risk of it being drawn on.  So we would always find drawings of rings, gems, scroll work, fleur de lys, monogrammed letters - and so on, in strange places - utility bills, the phone book - that kind of thing!
