Hello April!
A Splash Of Colour For Spring
Spring is finally on its way, bringing a rainbow of colours and blue skies! Despite losing an hour’s sleep with the clocks going forward the couple of sunny days we’ve had recently seems like good compensation. Easter is just around the corner and some schools have broken up for the holidays already so we’re indulging in seasonal delights—chocolate eggs, warm hot cross buns, and decorating our houses in bright colours. Getting out into nature on country or seaside walks seems to be popular, too, and we are enjoying the cheery sights of the bare trees starting to burst into life with fresh green buds to lifts our spirits after the gloomy wet winter we (hopefully) just left behind!
Speaking of fresh and vibrant, have you seen our new window displays? Inspired by the hues of golden daffodils, bright tulips, and spring blossoms, our windows are brimming with a bouquet of colours. From stunning pink and yellow sapphire rings to the ever-popular teal and green gemstones, there’s something in every colour. We also have a mandarin garnet coming through the workbench which will get us in the mood for summer with a pop of fiery orange.
Do you remember our exceptionally rare Padparadscha sapphire—the mesmerising peachy-pink gem we mentioned in our January newsletter? If you missed it on Instagram, don’t worry! It’s coming right up! It has been set and is ready in our window, looking absolutely breathtaking, and has even caught the eye of a photographer—they were so enamoured with it that it’s been photographed in a bridal shoot!
Come and try it on! It’s a great colour that works for evoking summer joy and pairs well with so many colours. It is right on trend with the last two Pantone colours of the year: Peach Fuzz 2024 and Mocha Mousse 2025.
Jewellery Photoshoots
With wedding season well under way we were honoured to provide the jewellery for two shoots recently which was really exciting! Whilst we are waiting on the second shoot photos and team list here is a snapshot from the first.
A huge thank you to the incredible team who brought this photoshoot to life — the results are nothing short of magical! From the stunning styling to the breathtaking photography, it’s a true reminder of how, when talented creatives come together, something extraordinary happens:

April’s Birthstone Is Diamond!
Explore this timeless number one gem in all its fiery beauty!
Here's a bit about April's birthstone:
Symbolism:
Diamonds are often seen as symbols of strength, clarity, and eternal love, making them a popular choice for engagement rings and other jewellery.
Hardness and Durability:
The name "diamond" comes from the Greek word "adamas," meaning "invincible" or "indestructible," reflecting the stone's exceptional hardness and durability. The word we use to describe how the light is reflected from the surface is called lustre and for diamond we say it has an adamantine lustre meaning brilliant mirror-like shine. Adamantine also deriving from the Greek word adamas. Diamond ranks top as a 10 on the Moh’s Hardness scale but they have excellent cleavage planes and are brittle so impact knocks can still crack and chip your stones.
History:
Diamonds have been adored and traded for centuries, with evidence of their use dating back to the fourth century BCE whilst natural diamonds themselves are billions of years old. Diamonds form from pure carbon about 90-150 miles (140-240 km) beneath the Earth’s surface under extreme heat and pressure and are brought up by volcanic eruptions. Laboratory-grown diamonds, however, can be created in approximately 4 months and above ground.
Cut:
The only thing that will cut a diamond is another diamond and did you know to polish a diamond you need diamond grit? Diamonds come in a variety of shapes. Historically, people did not know how to cut such a hard material but over time and with technological development new tools and knowledge allowed diamonds be cut into different forms to achieve different refraction and dispersion effects. From rose cuts to mined and old European, to the round brilliant and fancy shapes we have today, there are many styles to choose from and all a marker of the era they were faceted in.
Colour:
Diamonds commonly are colourless but when they come into contact during formation with traces of the element nitrogen it can colour them yellow. The more nitrogen, the more yellow they become. Boron will colour a diamond blue and manganese will colour it pink. Of course, we can also use radiation to colour diamonds to enhance the original colour or change it completely.

Some of you may know our Bespoke Manager Chris but let’s find out some more about his work and what he enjoys most! And which gemstone is his favourite—Can you guess?
-
This I think has to an art deco black pearl necklace with diamond cluster stations and a beautiful blue sapphire in the main feature cluster. Or the multi gem set panel necklace.
Another would be the springer spaniel gun dog ornament I made a year or so ago or maybe even the recent seahorse pendant.
-
Well, I think this has to be Tsavorite Garnet. The rich forest greens are irresistible. But, I would also happily say blue sapphire, this is a true classic! Rich Royal-Ceylon blue.
-
My favourite part of my job is the design/technical challenge. I love meeting all of our clients, and hearing their stories. But I can not resist the challenge of creating something technically difficult, something to stretch my abilities.

I do not think CAD has 'changed' jewellery designing. But it certainly has helped it to evolve, increasing possibilities and reducing the time it takes to produce patterns and samples - Especially with the advent of easy to use 3D polymer resin printing.
We still sometimes use traditional drawing techniques before we get to the CAD stage as this can be less time consuming for some designs.
When I joined TRFJ, over a decade ago (14 or 15 years ago now) CAD was already a big part of the process so I personally do not know life before CAD.
