Hello September!
Can you believe September is here already? The summer is almost over, we’ve seen Wimbledon and the Olympics come and go, it’s back to school with early starts again, the BBC proms are coming to an end and Autumn is on the horizon.
But don’t worry, there are still lovely things to look forward to in September. For those fashion conscious fans we have fashion week in New York and London so expect social media feeds to be showcasing the latest looks and predicted trends for Winter 2024/2025.
Timothy Roe will be off to the annual London Jewellery Trade Show to catch up with our colleagues, suppliers and industry friends whilst sourcing beautiful stones, gaining insights to the latest trends to bring you new designs and refreshing our knowledge on all things jewellery and gemstones. It should be a great trip. You can also expect to see new pieces coming through the workshop in the following weeks so keep an eye on our Instagram and website!

September Sapphires!

1. Sapphires come in a whole variety of colours and are not just blue! Lately we have been asked for many teal and green sapphires for engagement rings! But yellow, orange and pinks are popular, too. They are available in every colour except red.
2. The special colour combination of pink-orange or orange-pink is known as Padparadscha sapphire, the rarest sapphire colour. Its name comes from the Sinhalese word for lotus blossom. We have a loose stone in stock ready waiting for a special commission!3. They are number nine on the Moh’s Hardness Scale
4. Sapphires and rubies are from the same mineral family called Corundum
5. In addition to being the September birthstone, sapphire is also the gem commemorating the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.
6. Sapphires were discovered in Kashmir around 1881 when a landslide high in the Himalayas exposed a large pocket of velvety “cornflower” blue crystals.
7. Significant sapphire deposits are found in Australia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Cameroon, China (Shandong), Colombia, Ethiopia, India Jammu and Kashmir (Padder, Kishtwar), Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Nigeria, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, United States (Montana) and Vietnam.
8. Synthetic sapphire is used for the windows of supermarket scanners and spacecraft as well as watch glass on premium watches.
9. Sapphire often contains delicate intersecting needles of rutile that gemologists call silk.
10. Sapphires can display asterism which appears as a white star that moves over the surface of the stone. This phenomena occurs in cabochon cut stones and sometimes can have two stars. We also have some in stock so come and have a look at them if you’re curious!

Market reports show that sapphires and top quality gems like emeralds and rubies have steadily been increasing in price, and therefore value, consistently since the pandemic. Our gemstone broker colleagues have also confirmed this and we have experienced a steady increase when we’ve purchased stones for customers and stock. If you’d like to book in for watches and jewellery valuations for insurance please call us to arrange an appointment or for more information. With Christmas and New Year on the horizon it is time to start thinking about design ideas for pieces you would like to gift loved ones. Bespoke commissions take 6-8 weeks so you’ll want to make sure you have everything planned by latest end of October to guarantee items being ready in time for Christmas.
