February’s Birthstone: Purple Power

February is all about amethyst, one of the most historically cherished gemstones, symbolising tranquility, clarity, and creativity. This striking purple stone has long been a favourite among royalty and fashion icons alike. Did you know amethyst used to be the most prized and one of the most expensive gemstones alongside diamonds until large deposits in Brazil were discovered. For those familiar with Old Testament history, amethyst was one of the twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and featured on the breastplate of Aaron to keep him safe. It was considered a cardinal gem.

Just this month, Dame Anna Wintour made headlines at Buckingham Palace on 4th February, pairing a neutral, checkered, draped skirt suit with an exquisite amethyst collier necklace worth £55,000—proof that purple is stealing the spotlight this month!

Amethyst pairs beautifully with silver, rose gold, and yellow gold, making it a versatile choice for any jewellery collection. Whether you’re drawn to dainty studs or bold statement necklaces, this quartz family gem is a timeless treasure. Looking for a deeper, more durable alternative? Consider purple sapphires for everyday elegance.

Celebrities like Kate Middleton, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry have all embraced amethyst’s regal charm—why not add a touch of purple magic to your collection?

Spotlight on Trade Shows: Gemstone and Jewellery Events to Watch

The jewellery industry and Instagram is buzzing with excitement as we approach key trade shows around the globe: we’ve just seen the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show come and go (Feb 1-16), Birmingham Spring Fair (Feb 4-8) and INHORGENTA Munich is next (Feb 23-26) amongst other smaller fairs. These events are always out of peak season and from February to March and whilst we are not attending, we are watching from the sidelines for all the updates and inside news.

These shows are where the latest trends, collections, and gemstone innovations for the new year are revealed, offering a glimpse into the future of jewellery design. So far, for coloured gems garnets, tourmalines and spinels are stealing many a jewellery blogger’s newsfeed whilst diamonds in fantasy cuts were on the agenda for those in the trade.

Looking Ahead

Actress and model Zendaya is reviving Art Deco elegance with her stunning east-west set engagement ring. By taking a classic style in a bold new direction, the horizontally set stone creates sleek geometric lines while giving the illusion of a larger gem. Perfect for minimalist designs and refreshingly different from traditional settings, her ring echoes both 15th-century trends and the glamour of the Art Deco era—much to the delight of her fans.

It only takes one celebrity to spark a trend, and Zendaya has done just that. Since her engagement announcement, Google searches for east-west settings have surged. If you love this sophisticated look, you’ll adore our newly released east-west sapphire ring—crafted in our workshop and now waiting for you in our window.

That’s all for now! We can’t wait to see what stunning commissions we’ll be crafting in the months ahead. Need some inspiration? Take a look at our online portfolio to explore past creations.

Be well, and have a wonderful February!

Latest releases from the workshop:

From the bench:

Meet our goldsmith Graeme who joined the team last summer in 2024! Like most of our goldsmiths who have worked both internationally and in our London capital perfecting their craft, Graeme, too has international experience and his brother is also in the trade designing and crafting jewellery in South Africa!

1. What’s your favourite tool: Beeswax. It’s a fab product that has multiple uses on our bench like lubricating our saw blades and drill bits to make our work run smoothly and efficiently.

2. What was your favourite project: I once made a tiara back in my home country in South Africa. It was for Queen Lesotho of South Africa and a real honour. It was an impressive thing with so many diamonds.

3. What do you like about your job: I like to see the happy faces of customer when they get their jewellery. For me it’s all about the end result and seeing it come together. You have an idea of what something will look like but you never really know how it will turn out until you have the finished thing in your hands.

4. Favourite metal or gemstone: Platinum and diamonds. I love working in that metal. It’s durable and reliable and strong. And diamonds are just beautiful. When you’re looking at them under the microscope they are so sparkly. I know it might be boring but I just really love them and can appreciate that they come from just one material; carbon.
